Critique of NATO Defense policy
Hi Saagar, I am currently an IR Grad student interested in the Realist critique of US security commitments in Europe. I am significantly outnumbered in my classes, as no one seems to question the potential flashpoints of US security commitments and NATO’s Article V. Why do you think it’s become taboo in the West to question the US security commitments to Europe? Also do you have any book reccomendations or papers that critique NATO defence policy?
Could you respond to monologues on the other show?
Have you, or the CounterPoints hosts, considered doing responses to or just discussing monologues from the other show? That would be an easy way to mix up the debates that happen on both shows, especially when the two hosts on either show go back and forth on an issue several times. At this point, we can often guess how the other would respond to an argument and this might help shed new light on these issues without too much more work on anyone's part. Just an idea. Thanks!
Is a Speaker of the House even a good thing?
Enjoyed your coverage of the Kevin McCarthy malarky. You talked about some demands being made of McCarthy by Republican congresspersons that would result in diminished power of the Speaker. A few questions... what are the most important roles the Speaker plays in House proceedings? How many of these roles are derived from the constitution as opposed to bureaucratic nonsense accumulated over time? If these rules can be changed so easily, what democratic processes exist to give voters a say about how their leaders conduct business? Would a diminished role for the Speaker result in more or less responsiveness of the House to voter's actual concerns?
